Roman is turning out to be a main team stalwart. He is absolutely wild to go with his performance matching his enthusiasm. He ran both days flawlessly. |

Vajradhara's Cooper-2004 |
M |
Cooper ran both days like a wild man. Always the first one to dig in harder on the hills when called up; always happy, wiggling around on the truck, talking up a storm. Every run with Cooper on the team makes it all worth while. |

Vajradhara's Cortland-2002 (L) |

Corty came along as an alternate, but ended up not racing. He has been showing signs of wearing out on the longer runs during training, and he gets soooo nervous at races that the right choice seemed to be to go with Prudie and hope that she didn't have a lingering injury. Turned out to be a good decision--Prudie ran great. |

Prudie was having some residual shoulder soreness from Beargrease so I only ran her the 2nd day. No signs of soreness whatsoever and she ran like a superstar. I didn't run her in lead because she and Sesame and Poppy sometimes have grumbly bitchy issues up in lead together and I didn't want to deal with that during a race. Prudie has a great dynamic working with Best in lead but with Best out this race, I played it safe and ran Prudie in wheel. |

Vajradhara's Fuji-2002 (L) |
M |
Fuji ran in point with Gally both days. Ran like his usual invisible self. I never have to worry about Fuji - his maturity and dependability are real assets to the team. Fuji has run in every race since he was 2years old. Never injured, never sour, always doing his job and happily at that. |

Vajradhara's Gallatin-2005 (L) |

Gally took the place of Best on the team for this race. He ran both days and did a great job in point. Not the hardest driving dog or the strongest by any means, Gally puts just enough on the line to contribute and it's easy enough for him to get away with it. Although I think it is his personality that let's him do this. He is a lot of fun on the truck, always wanting to get smootched up and play. |

Vajradhara's Merlin-2004 (L) |
M |
Merlin did a terrific job running the first day next to his brother Cooper. He seemed to have a little bit of trouble the last 1/3 or so of the run and necklined a little bit. He tends to do this on softer trails. To be safe I sat him out the 2nd day and replaced him with Prudie. |

LuLu ran very well both days. Not in her usual stellar way, but she can be a little soft in the head sometimes. She had been having some shoulder soreness after White Oak so we sat her out of Beargrease. No signs of soreness at all - I think she's just a little bored. |

Vajradhara's Poppy-2007 (L) |
F |
Poppy ran lead with her sister Sesame both days. Doesn't drive as hard as Sesame up there and can be overly cautious of people and other teams but not to an overly detrimental effect. She did whimp out on some hills later in teh run on the 2nd day but when I called her up she dug in. Boy was she happy to get back to Best when we got home. Both girls bee-lined to Besty and had a good romp. |

Vajradhara's Sesame-2007 (L) |

Sesame was absolutely stellar in every way driving hard both days in lead. The only drawback to this girl is her wierd innate fear of snowmobiles. She could also eat and drink better on the truck but it so far has not impacted her performance at all. Watching her run takes my breath away. She has become a dependable, trustworthy leader. |

While Mark stayed home to attend a safety meeting for work the Beags and I headed up to Bayfield with 6 of the Beargrease dogs plus Gally, Merlin, Corty, and Miracle (who had been nursing a sore shoulder from training after White Oak). The original plan was to run all of the non- Beargrease dogs with the yearlings, but we felt like we needed to redeem ourselves for not managing the team well at Beargrease. The dogs have also been getting somewhat bored with training on our home trails, so going to Bayfield would be a mental relief from that. With a ten dog pool for the 2x40 mile runs, I had the benefit of switching someone out for the team if needed. I also decided to camp out with the dogs for the weekend which was TONS of fun.
We were 18th out on day one and ended up in 3rd place - 5 minutes behind Lyle Ross and 13 behind Truman Obermeyer. Truman has a smokin' team again this year. The trail was VERY soft and punchy (not as bad as last year), but the dogs were animated and ran great with Poppy and Sesame lin lead. The two girls have a really nice dynamic working together in lead, although Poppy is a little bit softer with passing and holds back coming into crowds of spectators. I didn't booty any of the dogs and I think this was a huge advantage for our team of lopers. Thankfully we didn't have the same issues with snowmobiles as we did at Beargrease, although we had a couple of encounters on a short section of connector trail. The girls kept the momentum up just fine.
What a relief to leave the starting chute on day 2 to find that the trail had set up. I knew the dogs would love it and that we'd have a good run. With one minute intervals the plan was to hang back for a while letting the dogs keep the chase up at an easier pace with Truman and Lyle in sight. We hung back about 3-4 team lengths from Lyle for the first hour or so and then we made our move. It took a while to leave him and I busted my butt running up all the hills and kicking to do so. A little bit of ribbing and teasing between mushers made for a real fun race experience and lightened the mood. I know he was just laughing at me back there but we had 5 minutes to make up on him and I intended to give it all we had. By the turn around loop he was finally out of sight.....but not for long. Two miles from the finish I turned around and there he was. I said something like, "you've got to be kidding me", and (out of breath) he said something like, "that isn't very nice to make an old man work so hard."
Later on Dr. Jerrry Vanek came over to the truck to see if I'd made up the time for 2nd place. He happend to be at the last road crossing which was about 10 miles from the finish. He said at that point he figured we had 2 1/2 to 3 minutes on Lyle. So, even with all our hard work we still weren't making up all the time needed to bump us up to 2nd place. Regardless, the dogs ran awesome and gave 110%. We are very proud of them.
